I picked up this book along with a few others and found this one to superior. It is well laid out, very clear and has pretty much all the information you would need if you are a tutor or thinking of becoming one.

This book answered many questions about how to properly start and run a tutoring business. It is written in easy-to-understand language with helpful tips on many pages. The example templates for communication with parents and bookkeeping ideas were especially helpful. Highly recommended!

Some good information, but not very useful for established teachers.

I really think this would be best for people just starting out, like a recent college graduate, to get the basics on tutoring. I am pretty specialized (high school biology, chemistry, physics and ACT science prep), have a website already and have a teaching job already.

I definitely think that some ideas got me to think about good marketing strategies, and for that, it was worth the price on kindle.

One of my top 10 steamiest stories ever! Wait until you see what was expected of a wife in Liberty, Montana!

Catherine lived in St. Louis and was supposed to marry Mr Beecham, not that he was any kind of a catch, but it was so hot at church one day that Catherine unbuttoned her top button. That set him off and from that point she was accused of being a wanton. He retracted his offer of marriage and she had no other prospects or opportunities in St Louis, especially with her father's debt hanging over her head. Her only viable solution was to become a mail order bride. Not only did she agree to become a mail order bride but she was married by proxy to someone she had never laid eyes on. Full of fear, she traveled to Montana, all the way wondering what it would be like to actually be with a man.
Alert! This is not a book to read in a room full of people. I wouldn't read it in a restaurant or coffee shop because I'm sure that anyone watching would notice my flushed face or the fact that I wasn't exactly breathing regularly.
Catherine's new husband Jake Bridger was big and beautiful. How lucky for her that Mr. Beecham retracted the offer of marriage. Catherine was thrilled to be married to this big, handsome man. A virgin, she was quite nervous at the anticipation of bedroom activities and perhaps it's best that she didn't know in advance about the culture and expectations of a wife in Bridgewater...expectations like 'corking' to follow the wedding ceremony.
I would classify this as a bit of a Western Erotic Fantasy Romance and it was arousing indeed. Although her husband agreed to delay his consummation of the marriage he had many other sensual plans. The husband had the responsibility to train the wife to meet his needs and there are very specific expectations, strict rules in that regard. He in turn is responsible for meeting his wife's needs even those needs that are accelerated and enhanced by the use of an aphrodisiac discovered by the original settlers of Liberty, Montana. In addition to a new way of depicting the submissive and master relationship, there is casual voyeurism, sensual domination.
If you are looking for a western/historical story in a 21st century b/d relationship, look no further. This is my first book by this author but I can tell that this will be the beginning of a very beautiful author / reader relationship.

Kinda dumb woman marries despicable man

SPOILERS. This book needs a trigger warning for anyone who's been drugged and raped. I'm a big fan of Vanessa Vale's other series, like Bridgewater and Montana Flowers, but this book, and I assume the rest of the series, is beyond the pale. The men in the town use drugs and humiliation to control and rape their wives, repeatedly extolling how "docile" and "biddable" the drugs make their women. (Don't come at me with some lame argument about it not being rape. There's no consent here, just coercion and deception.) The men have few redeeming qualities. They are liars, manipulators, and rapists, and think nothing of subjecting their wives to serious discomfort and pain (and I'm not talking erotic pain) in order to bend them to their will. If Vanessa would like to turn this into a series in which the downtrodden wives rise up and take revenge on their cruel husbands, I'd be all over that.

OK, I’ve read a few of the other reviews for this story and I don’t disagree. But, if you view it in the context of being non-consensual, it is a very erotic book. Also, let us not forget that women were viewed as property in those days and a man could do pretty much what he wanted. I really liked this book. It was sexy and very well written. Catherine is a mail order bride and Jake is the man who ordered her. Lol The community that Catherine has moved to does things differently. They make their wives sexually submissive by giving them and aphrodisiac that makes them needy all the time. In this story, we learn how Catherine is trained by Jake to become a wife in this community. When you read this story, look at it in the eyes of someone from this time and suspend your disbelief and outrage. It is after all, a story. I give this story 4 stars.

Plethora of trapping/grappling techniques

This book does a pretty good job of presenting techniques from a clinch, or another situation where one is close enought to use Wing Chun-style trapping techniques. It also covers moving into a clinch possition, as well as several takedowns and throws from said possitions. It covers using these techniques both offensively and defensively. Also covered is basic fighting stance and footwork, some standing submissions, and some leglocks for securing a person on the ground. The book was made in 1984, so it may not be 'state of the art' where some clinching and grappling techniques are concerned, compared to what has developed in modern MMA competitions. It's a decent enough book, and for someone with no knowledge of clinching, trapping, or basic upright grappling, I think it could be helpful, and is reasonably useful for MMA competition and self-defense training, but mostly as a suplementary text.

Honestly, what are the other reviews talking about?

I bought the book because the reviews were very good but it is not. I wanted to improve my techniques and the book tought me nothing.
Larry uses the name and image of Bruce Lee to sell something that is far from Lee's philosophy. What am I talking about: mediocrity. The book even has a foreword from Linda Lee, whom I think was only trying to help his friend a bit.
Yes, the books "shows" a variety of techniques. But there is no deepness in it. In the two years that I've been practicing from an very good Wing Chun Kung Fu teacher i've learned most of the tecniques exposed in the book, but with a huge difference.
Trapping and Grappling in mostly about awareness, balance, center lines, pessure points, joint control. Larry's book says nothing about that. Here is a typical text sample of the book (page 28) "If your opponent gives you a front hand answer, you can loop his front hand and throw a back fist. If he parries that, you can lop again and punch." This is accompained by a secuance of five tiny pictures wich loosely describe the movement. Only that sometimes you don't know how the guys got from picture A to B. The pictures are too small sometimes to see what's going on, where the punch went or how the grab is done. The text is fluffy and the design bad. Not much effort was put on the making of this book.
Watching at a smiley face on a Bruce Lee Picture in the book makes me wonder, would he actually had endorsed this book at all?

after being exposed to jkd,concept and original,kenpo,judo,boxing and so many seminars/books/videos studying and practicing since i was 13 and now im 40 {just so you know this isnt someone blowing smoke up your a;; here is my review:there are some good techniques in the book.but i have to disagree for alot of the grappling though-dont take my word for it-take it for checking and try it yourself! try the tech on page 95 - catch to figure 4 arm lock to takedown.if anyone with a decent amount of handspeed throws a punch at you and doesnt leave it out there for you to grab like is shown in the book or as you see in martial arts seminars-you not going to be able to pull off this technique.its bs to say the least.even if somehow you caught the punch like is shown-then you use BOTH of your arms to put the opponant into a figure four like as shown in the book-WHATS FROM STOPPING HIM from finger jabbing you in the eyes or for that matter hitting you with the other hand?! ive asked this in seminars and the only answer they give me is they ask me to throw a punch and then they do the technique even more harder then they would for the average participant-more answers like this-ask a question that makes sense and ill just try to inflict pain on you so youll shut up! kinda answer! or with their arm that is doing the figure four elbows you to the head AFTER THE FIGURE FOUR IS APPLIED...... of course i couldve easily fingerjabbed his eyes as both of his hands were tied up in his grappling figure four movement and really he had no defence except for his grappling movement.i even had my fingers right on his eye and even was able to "air" hit him 2-3 times in the throat and to his temple before he swept me - so tell me who really would have inflicted more damage if this "teacher" had tried a technique like this in the street against someone who justs keeps an open mind and just goes for whats open?? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! another nonsense tech is thinking that a lin lop sau {cross grabbing hand }is going to work in the street or in sparring-sure it looks good in the movies and in seminars when the participant isnt really trying to REALLY punch you but to think that after you throw a straight punch and its blocked by your opponant with a pak sau{slapping hand}with his rear hand that you are going to be able to use your rear hand to grab your opponants rear blocking hand and pull him into your lead backfist is a PIPEDREAM AND A JOKE TO SAY THE LEAST! dont take my word for it !!! try it in sparring yourself! chances are when you spend time trying to grab the opponants wrist you are going to get hit with his other hand or someother strike! techniques like this are good only for one thing-to advance to the next belt! really-think about it.bs techniques like this are taught in so many styles/arts. no wonder bruce studied western boxing so much after he came to the states! alot of his wing chun just wouldnt work against someone with a decent jab/cross or just a good jab! of course there is even some stuff in western boxing that is bs that cant be used in the street like taking a punch to your gloves because in the street you have no gloves on! and also this dancing around your opponant like you saw ali or leonard do is a joke against someone who kicks you in the leg or who steps on your foot -moves quickly in ON YOU AND jams you and PUMMELS YOU! TRYING TO BE LIKE ALI OR SUGAR RAY! HA! better off that when someone blocks your punch -instead of you trying to use your other hand to grab his blocking hand wrist you just collapse that arm that was blocked at the wrist -you collapse it into an elbow into the his head and with your other hand you either do a pinning pak sau{palm slapping hand} or you use it to punch,etc.make more sense? try it for yourself ! dont believe me! try it for yourself! take it for checking! YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE TEACHER-NOT ME OR ANY OTHER ONE! teachers will show you techniques but YOU are the only one who can see if they really work! teachers are not always teaching you techniques that work -----they are teaching you techniques so that you can progress to the next level/sash/belt and not necessarily teaching you techniques that work! i encourage ALL martial artists who are responding in their reviews,respond with positive and negative -by negative i mean constructive-comments so jkd gets "cleaned" up and hopefully one day jkd,wing chun etc.other martial arts are composed of PRACTICAL REAL LIFE WORKING TECHNIQUES/TOOLS THAT WORK AND NOT JUST USED TO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT BELT/SASH OR LEVEL! About the Author
Philip Klein is Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. He was a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award, and has received multiple research grants from the National Science Foundation. He has been made an ACM Fellow in recognition of his contributions to research on graph algorithms. He is a recipient of Brown University’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences. Klein received a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. He has been a Visiting Scientist at Princeton’s Computer Science Department, at MIT’s Mathematics Department, and at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), where he is currently a Research Affiliate. Klein has worked at industry research labs, including Xerox PARC and AT&T Labs, and he has been Chief Scientist at three start-ups. Klein was born and raised in Berkeley, California. He started learning programming in 1974, and started attending meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club a couple of years later. His love for computer science has never abated, but in a chance encounter with E. W. Dijkstra in 1979, he was told that, if he wanted to do computer science, he had better learn some math. His favorite xkcd is 612.

Many typos in first version

I found this book invaluable while taking the author's course Coding the Matrix on coursera.org. However, this first version was rushed to press with insufficient editing. It is rife with typos, some of which could mislead readers not already familiar with linear algebra. The index is both skimpy and inaccurate. Unless you currently need this book for a course, I recommend waiting for a corrected edition.

The Kindle version is not the same as recent printed versions and contains errors long since corrected in the print format.

This review is specific to the Kindle version of the book.

The textbook as intended is excellent. As many other readers have noted going back several years, the 1st edition of this book had an over abundance of typographical errors which have been corrected in more recent print versions. Amazon advertises the publication date for the Kindle version as April 7, 2015 but it contains all of the original typographical errors.

When I purchased the Kindle version I knew about the typographical errors of the first edition and I also knew that the recent print editions had been corrected. I purchased the Kindle version as it had a very recent publication date and I was reasonably expecting that it would have been based on a corrected version of the text. I was really disappointed that this was not the case.

While existing print copies of a book can't be updated, the same is not true for digital formats. Amazon has cheapened the Kindle brand by selling old versions of books and tagging them with recent publication dates.

Amazon should be correcting the Kindle version and providing updated versions to all of the readers who have purchased faulty copies.

An interesting approach to linear algebra

The book presents a fresh look at linear algebra. You'd learn things by coding in Python. The way vectors and matrices are treated are quite interesting and different from how they are treated in standard linear algebra libraries. The book guides you to develop a whole linear algebra library from scratch and learn things along the way.
You need to be reasonably comfortable coding in Python to fully appreciate the approach presented in this book. The book has a hands on approach and you need to do the coding exercises to fully appreciate the material presented. If you're not comfortable with Python or don't really want to do coding this book may not be for you. However, if you like programming in Python this is an excellent book to learn/review linear algebra.
The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the book contains a huge amount of typos. If you're somewhat comfortable with the subject you'd be able to figure them out but they are a constant annoyance nonetheless.

About the Author

Leonard L. Vasiliev is president of the NIS Association "Heat Pipes" and head of the Porous Media Laboratory, A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute, National Academy of Sciences, Belarus. He obtained his first doctorate degree (Candidate of science) in 1964 in Minsk. He is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer. Professor Vasiliev has authored or co-authored about 340 publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is the author and co-author of 14 books, 218 Soviet authors’ certificates on invention, and 12 patents.

Sadık Kakaç received his degree of Dip.-Ing (1955) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul (ITU, MS degrees from MIT in mechanical (1959) and nuclear engineering (1960). He has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific papers on transient and steady-state laminar, turbulent forced convection, two-phase flow instabilities, fuel-cells modeling, micro heat transfer with sleep flow, and Micro/nano heat transfer. He is a fellow member of ASME and a recipient of the ASME heat transfer memorial award. He is a member of the scientific council and executive committee. Prof. Kakac edited and co-edited 14 volumes on thermal and fluid sciences and applications including a hand book o convective heat transfer.

Dr. Patricia Allen, who co-authored Getting to "I Do", is a psychotherapist with an extensive marriage and family practice in Los Angeles, where her Monday-night workshops at the Century City Playhouse have been attended by thousands. In the old days, men were men and women were women, but this is no longer true. Today we have multiple choices, and we need new concepts if we are to mate and marry and stay married. With poor role modeling by divorced parents, and conflicting media images of maleness and femaleness, men and women are creating a mixture of old traditions and new-age values to the confusion of everyone. Western culture has traditionally cast men as the protectors, leaders, and predominant doers. Men have traditionally proposed to women, have conferred status upon women, and have been the security providers. Women, on the other hand, have been the domesticators, the followers, the recipients-they have made themselves available to the life plans of men and have been responsive to male needs. Maleness, in this scheme, is the pragmatic, functional way in which we handle work and initiate action. It is verbal, centered in the left lobe of the brain. Femaleness is the passive, the receptive, the emotional centered in the right lobe of the brain; it can be represented as nonverbal energy. Its function in traditional terms is to serve as an outlet for emotion and a moral brake; it can be seen as the stable center that allows a relationship to develop and be maintained.

Although both male and female elements are vital to the makeup of both men and women, for a relationship to be healthy and successful, they must be reconciled and be complementary. In other words, there can only be one male and one female in every relationship.

Still married and loving it!

My husband and I were on the verge of divorce a year ago, and now we can't get enough of each other.. all because of this book! The title is misleading because it's not a book for the wife.. the husband needs to read it as well for this to work. I recommend it to everyone struggling with marital roles and the confusion and frustration that comes with it. It's smart and realistic and it works! Skip the sexist comments - they aren't important to the theories - and learn from the rest.

A fun read -- and shocking advice that actually works!

I have read many books on communication, and many books on how to be even happier in interpersonal relationships, and I can honestly say that Staying Married... is the best, and most helpful, one I have ever read. Don't expect sweet-sounding advice that doesn't really work -- this book gives you the real deal. The section entitled "How To Get What You Want From Your Man Without Asking" is amazing. After reading it, I applied the principles... and they worked!

Great Book---Really!!!

Whoever is reading these reviews will see some negative reviews. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! This book has some VERY good "insights" into how male/female relations work. Thus you will learn "how to adjust" any relationship so that there will be greater harmony and compatibility in your relationship and/or marriage. Please read it with an open mind and with the idea that roles can be changed and "alternated"---the male/female "roles" are not "made in cement"----they can be changed, with mutual consent, depending on day to day circumstances. Please read with an open mind. You will help yourself and your marriage if you do. Email boland7214@aol.co
