About the Author
Stanley J. Tambiah is Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. Among his several books is "Sri Lanka: Ethnic Fratricide and the Dismantling of Democracy" (1991).

Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.

A sourcebook on Thai Animism

Although this book is written for an academic crowd, it is a fascinating read that kept me interested to the end. There is so much information in this book regarding Thai animistic beliefs that it boggles the mind. It covers funerary rites, ghosts, lore, spirit houses, witches, warlocks, reincarnation, etc. The author mentions something in passing that I found to be extremely profound regarding the modern Thai Buddhist/animist fusion--that the reason so many Thais worship ghosts is because they can deal or barter with the spirits to get around the karmic hand they were dealt at birth. Since there is no escaping karma, you can bribe a ghost with an appeasement offering to help you in marriage, business, love, or whatever else. This explains so much about the mindset behind ghost worship, that I wish he would have expanded on it more--although the author does cover in great detail, the Thai cosmos, spirit world, and its relation to Buddhism. You may have to read this book more than once to absorb it all.

Poor comparison to others

This is the book my residency chose for this year's book review, and I am very disappointed thus far (have read ~ 20 chapters). The grammar and editing are embarrassing at best and do more to get in the way of learning than I would have thought possible. If it were not a violation of copy write, I would include one of the many sentence fragments that often contain up to 4 commas each. This seems trivial, but it is very difficult to read.

The index is atrocious - try looking up "keratolysis exfoliativa." You'll not find it under the K's. Instead, the best shot is to go to exfoliative dermatoses and look in the 12 page range provided (worst case scenario, you actually end up in the "children" heading looking at the exfoliative dermatoses subheading that takes you to cutaneous T-cell lymphomas).

It is also important to wash and dry your hands before opening the book if you have eaten anything within 10 minutes. I ate popcorn one night while studying and the oil on my palm wiped words right of the page of my $300 book.

I'll finish Fitzpatrick because it is part of the residency program. In good conscience, however, I cannot recommend it to those looking to purchase a definitive text. My only other experiences are with Bolognia's "Dermatology, 2nd ed." and "Andrews' Diseases of the Skin." For the PCP, Andrews has the best index you will ever find and it will guide you in the right direction. What it lacks, however, is the detail found in a larger text like Bolognia (968 pages vs 2776 pages) That's where I would start if I were looking at a 2 volume set (and there online support is amazing). To be fair, Bolognia's index is not as good as Andrews', though if you have any difficulty, the online search function of the e-book is wonderful.

Great - easy and simple

I have ms and I have an almost 6 yr old who is showing signs of being effected by it even though I do everything I can do shield her from it she still is aware. The book was simple and didn't scare her - we often repeat a page - when mommy isn't feeling well what does the giraffe do? Rest mommy now go take a nap.

THE DAWN OF ALL, the second of Benson’s two science fiction satires, is a "counter- blast " to the terrifying LORD OF THE WORLD. Contradicting the notion that this novel presents a blueprint for an ideal society, "Benson wrote often and emphatically that he did not for a moment expect the pictured solution to realize itself, and that he even hoped it would not. Neither Science, nor the State, nor Religion would ever, he was convinced, find themselves in such mutual relations as he had invented." (C. C. Martindale, S.J.)

About the Author
Robert Hugh Benson (1871-1914) was the youngest son of Edward White Benson, Archbishop of Canterbury, and younger brother of Edward Frederic Benson. Benson was educated at Eton College, and then studied Classics and Theology at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1890 to 1893. In 1895, he was ordained a priest in the Church of England by his father, Edward White Benson, who was then Archbishop of Canterbury. His father died suddenly in 1896, and Benson was sent on a trip to the Middle East to recover his own health. While there, he began to question the status of the Church of England and to consider the claims of the Roman Catholic Church. His own piety began to tend toward the High Church variety, and he started exploring religious life in various Anglican communities, eventually obtaining permission to join the Community of the Resurrection. Benson made his profession as a member of the community in 1901, at which time he had no thoughts of leaving the Church of England. But as he continued his studies and began writing, he became more and more uneasy with his own doctrinal position, and on 11 September 1903 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1904 and sent to Cambridge. He continued his writing career along with the usual elements of priestly ministry. He was named a monsignor in 1911.

Deathbed Conversion

A novel in which an apostate priest, on his deathbed, slips into a coma and is given the grace to see the world in a different light; a world in which Christ reigns Supreme. Through this revelation, he discovers the abundant errors of Modernism --the very errors that had led him away from the Catholic Faith. This is a blueprint for the Social Kingship of Christ in our times. Fascinating!

Fantastic book!

Wonderful description to the Church and how it sees itself in relation to the world. If you want to learn about the Catholic view of the world, this is a great book of the world! For me at least, the main character's struggles with the Church mirror my own concerns about the Church being a temporally powerful body, and I learned a great deal from seeing his concerns assuaged.

Monsignor Benson wrote this second futuristic novel in as an attempt at offering a more positive view of the Catholic church's future than he presented in the first novel Lord of the World where socialism triumphed over religion in a doomed world... In this one, Benson imagines a future where the Catholic church is a dominate force in government, education and even science, a complete reversal of the situation in the first novel. He does so through his principal character, Monsignor Masterman, a priest who after losing his faith, becomes so ill, he.falls into a coma-like sleep only to awaken without any memory sixty years later in in a world dominated by the church. Throughout the rest of the novel, the Monsignor regains his memory and his faith, surely positive things. As great as that sounds to a Catholic like myself, the tale, as Benson presents it, reminds us to be careful what we wish for. As renewed as the Monsignor's faith is, he soon becomes troubled by the "employment of force on the side of Christianity" as evidenced in the heresy trial of Dom Adrian Bennett and forced immigration of "infidels" to, of all places, America where they are free to think as they like. Everywhere else, it seems, government, not the church itself, is ready to prosecute " heretics and blasphemers" to the full extent of the law. Not as barbaric as Isis perhaps, but not exactly the church of Jesus Christ either. I enjoyed the novel ( it's the fourth Benson book I've read ), but less than the others largely because it seemed more talk than dramatic action, too limited in its characters ( no women, all clerics) and less plausible than his other works.

About the Author
Dr. Bill Senyard and his wife, Eunice live in the front range of the magnificent Rocky Mountains near Denver. He has served as pastor of churches in British Columbia and Eastern Pennsylvania and is now the lead pastor of Lookout Mountain Community Church, Golden, Colorado. Among his many credits, Senyard is the author of The Jesiah Scrolls (2011), co-author of The Kiss of God: Rediscovering the Song of Songs (2011), The Song of Songs Novella (2011) and a contributor to Tyndale House’s acclaimed Holy Bible: Mosaic (2009). Senyard earned his DMin at Biblical Theological Seminary (Hatfield. Pa), MDiv at Regent College (Vancouver, B.C.), after 15 years in a variety of business roles and opportunities. He also has a MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a BS from LSU in Chemical Engineering.

Beyond Good Friday and Easter

God forgives us. How does that work? We don't understand everything that happened on Good Friday and Easter Resurrection Sunday, but we say "Thank you." Now, we're supposed to forgive others. Again, how does that work? Especially if they've done something horrible to us or a loved one, we're often at a loss how to even begin to think about forgiveness. My good friend Bill Senyard's new book points the way.

hobo jungles

You gotta trust your gut, not this book. I've been to hobo jungles where there's nothing but low scum who'd cut your throat for a loaf of old bread. I travel alone for that reason. There's a lot of hobo gangs on the road too that will use you for about everything and rat you out to save their own hides. In this way, you need to trust basically just yourself and travel that way. This has a few helpful things, but it relies on "abstracts" too much.

If you are sleeping, find a place that is completely isolated and away from cops, drunks, hobos, or anyone. Preferably it is to be in some forest, where you can hide at night. Go to the city during the day and get food and water, avoid cops at all times, since in some small towns they will charge you for loitering, and if they don't like you, will beat you to a pulp and toss you in the can with a hefty fine. If you can't pay it, you'll have to work for their "slave labor" doing rural work. They do this so they don't pay actual workers.

Be wary of people trying to be your "friend", take it from me, 89% of the time it's a set up for a church, or a rat for the town cops, or just some nut job trying to whack you later in the alley.

Also, if you aren't knowledgeable in 'Freight hopping' or train hopping, don't do it, it is both deadly and dangerous. The trainyard bulls will beat you, plus you may lose your life quite easily. Also, if you are on the road trying to "get drunk" all the time, then that's spelling trouble as well. You need a clean head and your senses when living on the road.

If you aren't used to skinning small critters for dinner, then don't stay out in the boondocks, go near a town where you can get old food for free or cheap.

Fun Read even if you aren't going to hit the rails

This is a very useful handbook if you're going to be anywhere on the spectrum of hoboing, from basic hiking/camping advice - to the hardcore of what type of roadkill is edible and what isn't. It was a fun escape into the world of hoboism from the mundane computer and cubicle world.

Enjoyable Reading - Highly Recommended

"The Hobo Handbook" was recommended by a friend what knows I enjoy books on "roughing it". First off, I appreciate the intentional "grubby" look and feel of the book, the cover is rough and the pages look stained and worn, not unlike the first publishing of my sister's book Possum living: How to live well without a job and with almost no money (this is the link to the old 1970s cover, not the 2010 re-release). The tone of the writing is friendly and often humorous, without being condescending or judgmental, and makes this a fun and easy read.

The very first sections is the "Hobo Aptitude Test" and taking it will quickly tell you if a life on the road and hopping train cars is meant for you. The following sections include such useful information like how to hop on train car without getting squashed (or "greasing the tracks", as the author calls it), finding "Hobo Friendly" accommodations, grooming and health concerns on the road, reading the Hobo signs (yes, there is secret Hobo code language), and even useful information on knot tying. Peppered throughout are handy tips, short anecdotes, and tales of "celebrity" Hobos (Jack London, for example).

This is an entertaining and enjoyable book, even for those of use who will never take a chance at jumping on a moving train or intentionally sleep under the stars with only a newspaper as a blanket.

Simple, Not Easy, Very Effective

I just finished MMS. It was a huge success for me. I put on 10lbs of lean mass and got much much stronger. I have always been quite weak, and the first workout of 30x95 was a max for me. I didn't know how I was going to do it twice three days later. I ended up being fine and every workout felt like significant progress. I wanted to share some of the insights I have come up with from the experience.

A little background for reference:
Age: 25
Training Age: 2.5 years
Height: 6'2"
Starting Weight: 192lbs
Max Starting Back Squat: 225x2
Max Starting Bench: 185x1
Max Starting Press: 135x1

The final results were:
Weight: 202lbs
Back Squat: 205x30
Bench: 215x1
Complex: 2 reps at 125

Other relavent information:
Diet was paleo except for the protein shakes. I never missed a workout. I missed supplements and shakes 3 times in the 6 weeks. I always trained alone. I wouldn't have thought the last one mattered much, but thought more about it after reading the link on the Dan John blog recently.

As far as I'm concerned, any one of those numbers would have qualified for success, but the group is very satisfying.

Now for what I learned:

Complexes are key to making the gains lean. Along with their value in adding upper body mass, they keep the heart rate up to burn fat. The high rep complexes in the first part of the program were sometimes the hardest part of the workout. As the weight went up and the reps went down, the stress on the lungs and heart went way down, but my arms held me back in the pressing. I really enjoyed the complexes and will continue with them regularly.

Pressing takes a lot of reps. Like a lot people, overhead pressing has always been very difficult to me. Progress was very slow, but doing 30ish reps of bench and 20-30 reps of single arm presses added a lot of strength in those movements.

Warm ups and rest periods matter. In the past, I have done as little warm up reps and exercises as possible. With the stress involved in this program, I took the warm ups very seriously and used them to my advantage. I foam rolled and stretched every workout and never had a injury. I wouldn't expect anything major, but I didn't even have a twinge anywhere. As the weight went up in the pressing and complexes, the rest periods really started to matter. At first I was disappointed because they extended the workouts, but as my strength went up as I started training smarter, I discovered their value.

Size happens in clothes before the scale. All of my clothes are nearly too small with just 10lbs of mass gain. I feel like a completely different person even though not much has changed.

High rep squats burn out the mind and the back before anything else. I always quit the "to 50" sets when I thought I couldn't take the pain in my back any longer. I never worried about missing a rep, but resting with the bar on my back took as much out of me as the actual movement. I think my back turned out to be my most obvious weakest link. I will be focusing on back strength a lot in the near future.

When you are eating "clean" 3,000 calories is a lot of food. I never checked calories until the program was over because I was always eating as much as I could. I was shocked to find that even with the prescribed shakes, I was under 3,500 most days. I stayed with the paleo diet because it has kept me so healthy and I noticed major differences when I eat grains or dairy. I can see how valuable peanut butter and jelly sandwichs are though. When I recommend this program, I will make sure to say they are worth it if size is the goal.

Fiber helps.

I kept a lot of notes and have been writing a lot more since I completed the program. I think I learned a lot about myself and training from the past six weeks, but I expect to learn a lot more in the near future. Thanks for providing such a great program. Like most programs, when you DO them, they work.

Another brilliant book. Exactly what I expect from Dan John, really. It's simple without being dumbed down, and you should come to understand the idea of adding one piece to the puzzle at a time, track your progress, and see what made the greatest difference for you.

Horrible book for Risk Management Class - defeats the purpose because so poorly written

Let me start by saying that I do have some experience with risk management from a professional sense - I hold a CPCU, Assoc in Comm Underwriting, an Assoc in Risk Mgmt, worked for a major national ins carrier, and also use RM in my current professional as well. The bottom line here is that this book is simply a mess. The author's have trouble explaining basic concepts, move too quickly into trying to provide real world examples before they solidify the concept, contradict themselves on definitions between chapters, and introduce complicated concepts (for example the grossly inadequate statistics lessons in chapter 3) far too early when they should be focused on building a solid foundation of risk mgmt in general. Quite simply the book is all over the place and it's unclear what purpose the author's are trying to achieve. It needs a complete rewrite!

I bought the book for a basic risk mgmt class for my mba program - the book served to simply make the class more difficult than it needed to be.
