Concise and invaluable
By 2read2U
This is a strong resource for medical students near the time they are applying for residency. It was well organized and covered the Match process sequentially, from choosing a residency, a time table, choosing an advisor, recommendation letters, interviews, and making your List, etc. I thought the coverage on "what are they [residency programs] looking for?" was particularly strong.

It has a chapter on special situations, but be aware that coverage for international graduates is very brief. It also doesn't cover a lot about choosing a specialty (I thought Anita Taylor's book on how to choose a medical specialty was best for that). It also doesn't cover a lot about strategizing the early medical school years, but that doesn't mean that a first or second year student couldn't benefit from it. I got this book right before starting medical school and matched at my first-choice ophthalmology residency, and this book was great help. Although coverage of some topics (such as for international graduates) was brief, its conciseness was a strong point when I didn't have a lot of time to read, enabling me to read it during my first year and "prime" myself for the match. I was also able to review it again during the interview/match process, and since it was not a heavy book, I was able to take it with me to interviews. This was a very worthwhile book for me.

This book is obsolete! Although it is posted as a "2013", it was actually published in 2000.
By Pelican Jones
This obsolete book was published in 2000. Its data is from the 1990's. It is NOT a 2013 edition, as it is misleadingly listed. Turns out it was "released" in 2013. Why would they post this book as though it is a 2013 ed? On that note, why was a book published in 2000 just being "released" in 2013? Kind of a shady way to sell an obsolete book. Some general info in the book seems sort of helpful, but definitely not worth the price of the book.

First Aid for the Match (Fifth Ed.) is way better, current, and less expensive.

Well written!
By Sunisa P.
The parts regarding the statistics and the date are outdated but the general content was very well written and gave me the ideas for the whole process and making the decision. I am a foreign medical graduate so I have very few ideas about the whole process. This book is quite good to give me what information to consider where to match, how to write the CV and personal statement.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory, by Caitlin Doughty

“Morbid and illuminating” (Entertainment Weekly)―a young mortician goes behind the scenes of her curious profession.

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty―a twenty-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre―took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. Thrown into a profession of gallows humor and vivid characters (both living and very dead), Caitlin learned to navigate the secretive culture of those who care for the deceased.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters and unforgettable scenes. Caring for dead bodies of every color, shape, and affliction, Caitlin soon becomes an intrepid explorer in the world of the dead. She describes how she swept ashes from the machines (and sometimes onto her clothes) and reveals the strange history of cremation and undertaking, marveling at bizarre and wonderful funeral practices from different cultures.

Her eye-opening, candid, and often hilarious story is like going on a journey with your bravest friend to the cemetery at midnight. She demystifies death, leading us behind the black curtain of her unique profession. And she answers questions you didn’t know you had: Can you catch a disease from a corpse? How many dead bodies can you fit in a Dodge van? What exactly does a flaming skull look like?

Honest and heartfelt, self-deprecating and ironic, Caitlin's engaging style makes this otherwise taboo topic both approachable and engrossing. Now a licensed mortician with an alternative funeral practice, Caitlin argues that our fear of dying warps our culture and society, and she calls for better ways of dealing with death (and our dead).

A sobering yet funny look at what happens behind-the-scenes in a crematorium
By sb-lynn
I had trouble coming up with a title for this review that wouldn't turn off anyone because I think this is an important book and I hope many, many people read it.

The author of this book has been fascinated with the subject of death and dying since she was a young girl and witnessed the death of another young girl who took a fall at a local mall. For years afterwards she was filled with angst and trepidation and described herself as "functionally morbid."

When she went to college she got a degree in medieval history with a focus on death and rituals and afterwards got a job working at a mortuary - the Westwind Cremation & Burial.

This book describes her experiences facing death straight on and how it actually eased her own existential angst and made her better able to appreciate and enjoy her own life. We not only read (detailed) descriptions of what happens to bodies in a crematorium, we also learn about other mortuary practices and what really happens behind the scenes.

The author makes such an important case against our own culture's tendency to avoid death (and aging!) and to try to avoid its very existence. She points out how in the past and how even today - in other cultures - family and neighbors took care of their dead and witnessed dying all the time. She points out how important that is to accepting our own death and by doing so, make it less frightening and esoteric.

Lest I give the impression that this is a depressing book, for me it was not. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments and when I finished the last page I found myself with a little less of my own existential angst.

This book reminded me a lot of science writer Mary Roach and I feel like I'd love to hang out and be friends with both of them. Ms. Doughty has such a pleasant writing style and when you're finished reading, you will not only have been entertained but educated as well. She takes on this sobering and angst-filled subject with an abundance of wit and sensitivity. I hope this book gets the attention and audience it deserves.

"Looking our mortality straight in the eye is no easy feat."
By Malfoyfan
I found this book to be a refreshing, unsentimental and honest look at the way Americans deal with death - which is to say, not very effectively. Author Doughty spent time working in a crematory and later went through mortuary school, and her memoir is by turns darkly funny, fascinating, disgusting, and touching. I have a lot of admiration for anyone who works in a crematory, does embalming, or deals with mourning relatives - it's very challenging work and I couldn't do it.

In addition to her own story, Doughty skillfully weaves in a history of embalming, American funeral traditions, other cultures' funeral rites and beliefs about death, and how the mortuary industry works, and it's all quite interesting, if sometimes a little difficult to read. If you're squeamish, it might be best to steer clear, as Doughty spares no description in her quest to open the reader's eyes to what really happens to our bodies after we die and how we can best understand and deal with death more honestly and directly than we currently do.

I don't know if I should say I "enjoyed" this book the way I would enjoy a novel, but I certainly appreciated it, especially since I have gone through the deaths of family members and am getting on in years myself, and I feel it's important to explore and be able to talk about our own ends openly, rather than tiptoeing around the subject.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the mortuary/funeral industry, medical students (doctors in this country don't deal with death very well), and anyone who, like me, wants to understand more about death and how to plan for it.

Make Sure You're Ready To Face Mortality!
By Quirky Girl
I was really torn about how to review this. I have a background in emergency medicine, so I understand that a sense of humor and looking at things in a non-serious way is what helps people get through difficult takes. I remember one time a reporter was riding a-long with us and we were dispatched to an accident. The reporter asked how I felt or something and I said, "I hope it turns into a vehicle rescue!" I ended up getting in trouble for saying that, though those who have worked in EMS/FIRE/POLICE totally understand where I'm coming from. It's not that I wished harm on anyone, it's just that I hoped the call would be challenging. So, it was with that sense of understanding I thought I was going to enjoy Doughty's trip into the world of what happens when EMS or doctors or whomever can't save a person.
I was not ready.
I only read a few chapters and had to put it down. Perhaps its my age (though I'm not that old!) I am facing mortality possibly sooner than I surely thought I would. And reading about what goes on behind closed doors, even though Doughty seems to be a great storyteller, I can't bring myself to finish this.
I'm giving this four stars because I certainly can't fault the author for my own lack of misjudgment, but not 5 stars because perhaps if she had written it in a...less witty (though I totally understand and appreciate her being herself!) and more oh...gah, I don't know, tender? way, I might have been able to swallow my fear and plod on.
As a Vine reviewer, I am obligated to leave a review, and I've never had this situation occur (and I feel dreadful about it!). I probably would have done well to read the first few chapters prior to choosing this, and I think it's a good recommendation for those considering reading Smoke...you might think you're ready to read about death, but once you open that door, you might wish you had kept it closed.
Bravo to Doughty and those who do the jobs they do.

UI is Communication: How to Design Intuitive, User Centered Interfaces

User interface design is a challenging, multi-disciplinary activity that requires understanding a wide range of concepts and techniques that are often subjective and even conflicting. Imagine how much it would help if there were a single perspective that you could use to simplify these complex issues down to a small set of objective principles. In UI is Communication, Everett McKay explains how to design intuitive user interfaces by focusing on effective human communication. A user interface is ultimately a conversation between users and technology. Well-designed user interfaces use the language of UI to communicate to users efficiently and naturally. They also recognize that there is an emotional human being at the other end of the interaction, so good user interfaces strive to make an emotional connection. Applying what you learn from UI is Communication will remove much of the mystique, subjectiveness, and complexity from user interface design, and help you make better design decisions with confidence. It's the perfect introduction to user interface design.

"Here [McKay] offers a guide to designing user interfaces by drawing on principles and common-sense insight about communication. This book should be on a "UX Designer's" required reading list.
By Thomas Tanner
The book is well written with more than just theory. Mr. Mckay gives you a concept, examples and practical practice questions at the end of each chapter. It is easy to read, I especially like the BOLD text throughout the book that highlights the most important aspects of the section for those that speed read something the first time around.

I gave a presentation to my development team, using some of the content from the book, and it was well received. I then recommended it to all the software engineers and the book has been one of the most sought out books in the department. I now tell the team to buy their own copy because I find myself needed to refer back to it often.

I wish all my clients and developers would read this!
By Jofodo
I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in designing or developing websites and applications of any kind. Regardless of your role (manager, designer, developer, etc.) - this book will help you succeed in creating something better for your users... which equates to a more successful product.

I've been designing for over 20 years and still learned new things from this book. The idea that UI is communication is interesting and helped me think about things in a different way. It's not just about how it looks and works, it's about what the user is trying to do... making it easy for the user to do what they are there to do.

Everett breaks it down with simple language and lots of examples that are easy to understand. I wish all of my clients and development partners would read this - it would probably save us time and money and get us to our goal a lot faster.

Leverage your communication skills to create exceptional user interfaces
By M. Wheaton
This is not an academic book, and I mean that in the best way possible. Many UX books drone on with hundreds of pages of theory and advanced methods, and those definitely have their value if you're looking for very deep knowledge of this field. Where this book excels is in giving you the tools to make immediate improvements. Have an ugly design problem you're trying to tackle and need a solid, grounded process to take it on? This is your book. Need to get developers or managers on board with UX and participating in the process? This is your book. Trying to explain what you do to your parents? This is your book.

The author's premise is that "user interface design isn't a subjective visual art about pixels and aesthetics but rather a principled objective communication skill to explain tasks to users". So while he does touch on mental models, interaction patterns, and visual design, it always ties back to communication. If this were a conversation, what would we say to the user? How would we say it? When would we say it? It seems obvious but is a surprisingly useful metaphor and he provides many examples of how to put it into action. Each chapter concludes with a page of exercises to expand your thinking and put the material into action – I wish my university had used this as a textbook.

The final chapter presents a couple design challenges with thorough solutions, working through the entire design process and showing each of the activities and deliverables. I've been hauling the book around in my backpack for the past few weeks so that I can apply that thinking to my own projects. That's about the highest compliment I could pay a book – there aren't any others that I've kept with me at all times and referenced so regularly.

Leaves Some Questions Unanswered
By MC-EE
Pretty good book, but it seemed to lack some detail/understanding that I really wanted as a senior/1st year graduate class in electrical engineering. I felt like I would search for answers to specific questions, just to have to go elsewhere to find it. However, I have been told, multiple times, that it is one of the best out there, so keep that in mind.

About the Author

Lora Leigh is the author of Live Wire, Forbidden Pleasure, and Enigma, among many others. Writing is her passion, her peace, and her lifeline, and she can often be found daydreaming and plotting and planning with the varied characters that fill her imagination. She lives in the rolling hills of Kentucky.

"Growing up I read, read, and read," she says, "and grew up to write, write, write." She has three sons and two dogs. A true Arizona native, she loves the desert and all of the sunshine and beautiful sunsets that go along with it.

Three Hot Reads from 3 Great Authors
By Mickey
Loved these quick 3 stories.

Lora Leigh- Sheila's Passion was a quick passionate and exotic read. If you've read Lora's stuff before you won't be disappointed. I bet if she wrote erotic stories about rocks you would have to get a fan to cool yourself off. Lora has a way of writing and descriptions that clearly leave their mark on you as you read the story. This story is about Sheila and how she has found the man she loves although because her father is a high ranking military official she has been burned before being in a relationship with a man who only needed her to get to where her father could promote him, so she is leery to believe that anyone would want her solely. Nick and Sheila burn up the sheets through the entire story but the mad man out there watching thinks Nick is someone else in hiding and uses Sheila to try and shake him out of hiding, although he's got the wrong man. Great story hope theres more to come from this one.

Cheyenne McCray -Deadly Dance is another quick read that covers the details of Keri a woman who was injured and terrified by an old boyfriend who she helps put in jail, and Detective Adam Boyd who's partner who was killed by the same man. The detective finds out that Carter has gotten out of jail on a technicality after only 7 years in prison and stops a hit from going down on Keri. The story is sweet and you can feel the emotions between Keri and Adam, and the suspense is good as well. Always love Cheyenne McCray's stories and you will probably like this one too.

Red Garnier - Caught is the first story I've read of Red's, and was impressed with the angst and sensuality of the story between Meg and Cody. Meg has loved Cody since she was a kid and Cody and his twin brother Ivan both wanted Meg. Ivan however is the darker of the twin brothers and tells Cody if he takes something he loves then he will take something that Cody loves and that ends up being his parents who Ivan kills when they are 16 years old. Through the years Cody grows up to be a homicide detective and puts his brother in jail as a juvenile but he breaks out pretending to be Cody and goes after Meg. Cody tells himself he can't have Meg because he has a killer's blood running through his veins but he finally lets down his guard to take Meg to bed 7 years later as well as taking the virginity she saved for him alone. I won't spoil the ending but they all lived HEA.

Legally Hot, more like Legally NOT
By Laura D. Mercedes
I am a huge fan of the three authors so I was super excited to pick this up, what a disappointment. No attempt was made at cohesive stories or ingratiating characters. The absolute worst unfortunately came from my personal favorite, Lora Leigh. Sheila is so annoyingly juvenile and wishy washy it is impossible to understand why Casey would love her. The other 2 stories were just completely forgettable, not either authors best work.

Legally lukewarm is more like it
By Kathy Davie
Three short stories which involve men in uniform, sort of.

Series: Sheila's Passion (Wounded Warriors, 0.75)

The Stories
Lora Leigh's Sheila's Passion is interesting, but Leigh needs to come up with a better premise for the driving purpose behind this. Her bad guy is chasing down someone he sees as betraying the family "trust", an Italian mob family's responsibilities to those under them. Gio "betrayed" all who relied upon him by loving his daughter and protecting that love. Now, the son whom Gio taught about love has escaped the Family. Disguised himself. So the bad guy is hunting for Beauregard and hurting, torturing, killing anyone close to any man he suspects might be Beau. It's his excuse. I ain't buyin' it.

So, this particular storyline has the bad guy focused on Shelia Rutledge and Nick Casey. Shelia's father Captain Douglas Rutledge is in charge of an intelligence post. One of the groups which gather intel is headquartered in/at Ethan Cooper's bar where Nick works as a bouncer where Sheila picks up the intel and how she met Nick. Both Nick and Sheila have their particular aversion to getting romantically involved so there's the usual give-and-take until a crisis forces them to acknowledge it. The romance in this is good, typical Lora Leigh; it's the underlying premise that really drags this down.

Cheyenne McCray's Deadly Dance is cute with the very protective Detective Adam Boyd, NYPD, falling in love with a witness who is threatened by the release from jail of her attacker. Keri Holliday was on the verge of a breakthrough in her ballet career when her boyfriend Edward Carter "objected" to her dumping him. Well, the twit did make the mistake of threatening to take her evidence about him to the police... It's a nice, sweet story but no great drama.

Red Garnier's Caught is a clash between twin brothers, one of whom is a sociopath who kills their parents. The other goes on to a career in law enforcement determined to make up for his twin as well as what he sees as his own failures. It's years later that Cody Nordstrom encounters Megan again. The same Megan over whom he and Ivan clashed. The same Megan he doesn't feel worthy of. The same woman who loves Cody and, this time, won't take no for an answer. This is the best of the three IMO even though I'm getting really tired of the "poor me" routine.

The Cover
The cover is yellow, blue, and hot pink: the authors, the background, and the title, respectively. A man in trousers is facing away with his left hand behind his back clasping a set of handcuffs.

The title...hmmm...yes, it's about men in uniform and I'd say it was more lukewarm than hot.

Amazon.com Review
Evangeline Scoffield of East Little Teignmouth, Cornwall, is a fraud. Rescued at a young age from an orphanage she had called home for most of her life, Evangeline goes to live with an eccentric and rich woman named Leona. When Leona disappears without a trace, Evangeline learns that she is the sole heir to the woman's fortune, and she wastes no time in packing a cache of cash and heading for Spain, posing as the refined lady she had always longed to be. To her shock, Prince Danior of Baminia appears and announces that he is her fiancé. He insists that she is the Princess Ethelinda and that they must return immediately to her kingdom where they are to be married. Evangeline's protests are cut short when someone lobs a bomb into her room and Danior pulls her to safety, explaining all the while that evil forces are determined to kill them both to prevent their marriage and the subsequent joining of their two kingdoms. The two set off on the long journey to Princess Ethelinda's kingdom, with Evangeline feeling as if she's tumbled down the rabbit hole. Not only does Danior stubbornly refuse to listen to her, but he's determined to consummate their betrothal. Evangeline's determination to set right this wrong is sadly undermined by her own growing attraction to the powerful, dark-haired prince. Still, Evangeline knows she must convince him of her humble beginnings, for a prince could never truly love a simple girl such as herself. Who is right, Evangeline or Danior? Is Evangeline the Princess Ethelinda or isn't she? And if not, how will Danior cope with the deep love he feels for her? The Runaway Princess has a dash of myth and magic, colorful secondary characters, and a wonderfully heroic hero and heroine. What more could a reader of romance ask for? --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
Dodd (A Well Favored Gentleman) transports readers into another enticing place and time, in this Regency with an inventive plot and sparkling characters. When English orphan Evangeline Scoffield comes into an unexpected inheritance, she decides to spend the money on an adventure. She travels abroad and masquerades as a "lady of mystery" at a Spanish resort. Everyone is awed by her aloofness and poise, convinced that she must be of royal lineage. When a handsome man claiming to be Prince Danior sees her, he insists she is the runaway princess of Serephinia?his betrothed. Evangeline goes along with the prince's declaration and finds herself in the middle of a war, and in mortal peril. When she tries to explain who she really is, nobody will believe her, including the gorgeous prince. Evangeline soon learns that she's destined to fulfill a prophesy and marry the prince, whether she wants to or not. Dodd's delightful story should gain glowing reviews from her growing horde of fans.

From Library Journal
Kidnapped by Prince Danior, Crown Prince of Baminia, who thinks she is the long-lost princess of Serephina and his intended bride, the orphaned Miss Evangeline Scoffield proves to be more strong-willed than any princess has a right to be. Old prophecies, crowns in crystal cases, and thousand-year-old saints add interest to a creative, intricately plotted story that features Dodd's trademark humor and sensuality. Dodd (That Scandalous Evening, Avon, 1998) is an award-winning writer of fast-paced, well-crafted historicals who lives in Texas. Readers will be waiting for her latest.

Just OK
By Catherine. Heathcliff
The story line is clever - unique and has potential. But it was confusing. There were hints to the resolution but then these would be confusingly countered by something else. Hard to explain but the end result was a not very satisfying story. I didn't think the chemistry between the main characters was strong enough to sustain the relationship. She kept insisting she was not the princess (ad nauseum) and he only cared about being king. I never felt he really cared about her. I didn't really like either of the main characters all that much. And there are inconsistencies. She is a large woman. Tall and not slight. But he carries her on his back for miles over mountains. I felt sorry for him! The writing isn't bad for the most part. Typos and weird things that may not be the author's fault. I won't be reading any more of this series. This is the second work by this author I have read. And probably my last. I will try other authors before I return to her work. Just my opinion. I am choosey with my reading time.

A Cinderella story!
By WHoosierBookie
If you have a love for fairy tales then you will love this book.
Evangeline is an orphan who has never had a chance to be her own woman. Suddenly she has the opportunity to travel and spend, so what if the money isn't legally hers? After one little taste of the good life, she will start a new, more quiet existence for herself. She doesn't count on all the gossip that she attracts.
Prince Danior is searching for his Princess Evangeline. Together only they can fulfill the prophecy to unite their two countries. His Princess has gotten a bit gunshy as the date that they must be joined together swiftly approaches. She has written him a letter telling him she can't do her duty. He is sure he can make her come around and see that they have to be married for the good of all their people. If only he could find her.
When Danior hears about the mysterious stranger staying at an inn, he is convinced she is his princess. He hasn't seen her since she was a child, but she has the coloring and features of her people.
This story has adventure. Danior must get his princess back to their country to start their rule. This is not easy because of the rebels who would rather not have the prophecy fulfilled. Also because of Evangeline herself, who knows that Danior has the wrong girl.
While there are some discrepencies and there is a supernatural edge to it, this a romantic tale about a girl who has nothing but the dream of a quiet, isolated life. What she winds up with and how she gets it is truly more than she could have ever hoped for. Oh, yes, you will also laugh!

Not a bad read, just about average....
By A Customer
If you want a good review, read Mrs. Giggle's review below (Many times I seem to agree with what she says). For a thin, on the surface, quick read, this book is just the ticket. We have a spunky yet intellegent heroine, and a...well...hero. Ms. Dodd's characters seemed a little flat to me. Don't dig too deep into these characters, you might come out the other side. Evangaline grew up as an orphan and was miraculously "found", (unknown to her of course) and taught everything she needed to know about being a princess (not knowning she was being groomed for the role). That's her character, all of it... Our hero on the other hand is a self centered, conceited, neanderthal. Everything he does is for the good of his country. I think he even convinces himself that falling in love is for it TOO!!!! Every part of this story glosses the surface. For example, what about the revolutionaries? Their beliefs, their motives, the organization? We are told that they ravage the countryside but are never shown it. Too much passive voice, telling; not enough active voice, showing. I just wish that there was some more depth to this story, I really wanted to love it, not just like it.

How filling life with play-whether soccer or lawn mowing, counting sheep or tossing Angry Birds-forges a new path for creativity and joy in our impatient age
Life is boring: filled with meetings and traffic, errands and emails. Nothing we'd ever call fun. But what if we've gotten fun wrong? In Play Anything, visionary game designer and philosopher Ian Bogost shows how we can overcome our daily anxiety; transforming the boring, ordinary world around us into one of endless, playful possibilities.

The key to this playful mindset lies in discovering the secret truth of fun and games. Play Anything, reveals that games appeal to us not because they are fun, but because they set limitations. Soccer wouldn't be soccer if it wasn't composed of two teams of eleven players using only their feet, heads, and torsos to get a ball into a goal; Tetris wouldn't be Tetris without falling pieces in characteristic shapes. Such rules seem needless, arbitrary, and difficult. Yet it is the limitations that make games enjoyable, just like it's the hard things in life that give it meaning.

Play is what happens when we accept these limitations, narrow our focus, and, consequently, have fun. Which is also how to live a good life. Manipulating a soccer ball into a goal is no different than treating ordinary circumstances- like grocery shopping, lawn mowing, and making PowerPoints-as sources for meaning and joy. We can "play anything" by filling our days with attention and discipline, devotion and love for the world as it really is, beyond our desires and fears.

Ranging from Internet culture to moral philosophy, ancient poetry to modern consumerism, Bogost shows us how today's chaotic world can only be tamed-and enjoyed-when we first impose boundaries on ourselves.

Review
"Proposing an aesthetic of play, [Bogost] draws on myriad examples, from golf to the task of watering his lawn to his daughter's self-directed rules of 'step on a crack, break your mother's back.' ...[the] idea-driven prose of PLAY ANYTHING might remind you of the applied-philosophy tactics of an Alain de Botton... demonstrate[s] the importance of thoughtful, serious criticism on gaming and play." -New York Times Book Review
"Of all the books on this list, this may be the hardest to describe, and in my assessment that was an asset. The year saw a few new entries in the 'Tackle life's challenges like a game' category, a thesis that's gaining momentum, but this book goes deeper than most via an enlightening discussion of the role of limits in both games and life. Bogost strikes me as equal parts philosopher and savant game enthusiast-a systems thinker with a penchant for high score formulas-and I'm glad he wrote Play Anything because it's causing me to look at problems in a different way. Read it and I think you'll see why."-Dan DiSalvo, Forbes.com, Best Brain Books of 2016

"An erudite and often amusing book." -Wall Street Journal
"Play Anything isn't really just an argument for turning dull tasks into games. It's a manifesto for a different attitude to the world." -Guardian (UK)
"I can tell you that a great way to have fun with the job of writing a book review-to play while writing it-is by pursuing it earnestly and seriously as a book review. A humble, highly constrained genre. You tell people about the book. You tell them whether you think it's worth reading. (Yes.) And then, instead of allowing your ego to ruin everything by trying to make it cool, you move on in search of the next playground." -Slate

"Part personal meditation, part guide to living a happier life, Play Anything is a Walden for the 2010s." -New Scientist
"Play Anything is a one-stop workshop for how to play in the 21st century... a manifesto, and it declares that more recess is good for the soul. Maybe pick this one up in your off-time." -San Francisco Book Review

"Empowering, fresh, and engaged." -Kill Screen
"For anyone who cares or works with or thinks about things like fun, enjoyment, happiness, play, and games, Play Anything is a conceptual thrill ride. Poetic. Deeply philosophical. Refreshingly insightful. It will challenge almost everything that you think you know about play, and then lift you towards a new and remarkably freeing perspective on everything else." -Deep Fun

"An essential read for those seeking to understand how a new idea of play can be positive for our lives." -Library Journal, starred review
"[Bogost's] arguments are thoughtful and useful for approaching ordinary experiences. A delightful book that promotes playfulness with a purpose." -Kirkus Reviews
"It's difficult to imagine a book that takes on David Foster Wallace, Barry Schwartz, Mary Poppins, and a host of philosophers under one premise. Yet Bogost, professor of interactive computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology and founding partner at a video games company, has done so." -Publishers Weekly

"Play Anything is nothing short of brilliant. It proves that philosophy can fun, that fun can be profound, and that play is in fact the bridge that connects what is most meaningful and what is most pleasurable in our daily lives. I will be recommending this provocative and entertaining book to everyone I know." -Jane McGonigal, bestselling author of Reality is Broken and SuperBetter
"This is one of those books that blossoms: now tacking through intellectual history, now seizing on philosophical argument, now touched by memoir. At its hybrid heart, you'll find the meaning of 'play,' as well as 'fun,' and maybe even 'life.' Maybe you pick it up because, like me, you're a fan of Ian Bogost's essays, or maybe because you've enjoyed one of his previous books. No matter how you approach it, Play Anything will surprise you. You'll realize: this is a book with big ambitions, carrying a theory of the world that is covertly radical and, by the end, nothing short of thrilling." -Robin Sloan, bestselling author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

"A landmark. Play Anything is a humane and personal theory of play for the supermodern age. Full of fascinating insight and fresh perspective, Play Anything shows how play serves as a fundamental tool for examining the world around us. Through play we limit, focus, constrain and experiment into order to bring certain aspects of our world to the fore while allowing others to recede. As the basis both for creativity and for well-being, as well as the antidote to detached irony, play is how we all recognize our Davids, big and small, from the infinite blocks of marble all around us." -Stewart Butterfield, CEO of Slack Technologies
"Play Anything is a profound book: both a striking assessment of our current cultural landscape, and at the same time a smart self-improvement guide, teaching us the virtues of a life lived playfully." -Steven Johnson, bestselling author of How We Got to Now and Everything Bad is Good for You

The World as Artwork
By Frank Lantz
Here’s a game I like to play. Next time you are in an art gallery, turn away from the paintings and look at the people. Look at them as if that was the show. Look at the other visitors in the gallery exactly the same way you would look at the art, as if they had been put there to be seen, admired, analyzed, and understood. This game is harder than it looks. We don’t realize how many different ways of looking there are, and how different they are. But if you are able to successfully play this game you will learn some things. First, you will learn how ruthlessly we look at art, how rapacious and haughty and impatient and demanding we are. What is this? Where did it come from? What’s going on here? What does it mean? Do I like it? Is it worth my time? Turning our art gaze on our fellow humans is shocking, embarrassing, you will instantly want to recoil back to the polite and diplomatic gaze we use for each other. Don’t. Because if you persist in this rude game you will learn something else. Humans are amazing. Judged as artworks, random people are deeply, desperately, heartbreakingly beautiful. They are strange, surprising, fascinating. They are overloaded with complex patterns, the primal pleasures of platonic geometry mixed with the playful, self-referential curves of postmodern signifier-tricks. Looked at as artworks, humans are bottomless pools of hypnotic meaning – masterpieces of light and shadow, color and shape, symbol, signal and noise.

You can do the same thing just walking down the street, or in a coffee shop, or a business meeting, or standing in line at a bank. It doesn’t have to be people. It can just be a random street corner with its ordinary surfaces, and all the banal details of the regular world. If you can trick yourself into looking at things as if, as if they were someone’s work, as if they had been arranged with a purpose, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the world’s haunting beauty – the subtle echoes of shape and pattern, the way the light hits the bricks at just the right angle, the suspenseful mystery of an errant shadow, the perfect punchline of an upended cup.

This is the trick that Ian Bogost plays on himself, and us, in Play Anything. And according to this book it’s the trick that games are playing on us all.

This is a strange book, at first glance it looks a bit like self-help, pop psychology, or life advice, but it’s far weirder and more interesting than that. One of the early voices and key figures in the history of game studies, Bogost’s entire career has involved trying to figure out the tricky relationship between games and the world, starting with the primary question – what would it mean to take games seriously? How should we approach games as a topic for serious cultural criticism? For a long time, Bogost’s answer to that question involved thinking through the many ways games can be about the world. As a critic, and as a designer, he has emphasized how games, like other forms of media, can reflect the world – expressing ideas, operating rhetorically, conveying arguments through dynamic models and interactive systems. He has celebrated their power to communicate and persuade and cautioned against their enthusiastic adoption by the snake oil salesmen who would apply them as a magic elixir for shaping behavior.

This book marks something of a radical break with these concerns. In Play Anything games are treated less as things that work on or through or about or against the world and more as aspects of the world itself, invitations to experience the world as it is, not as we imagine, not for our sake, not in our interest, but on its own terms – blunt, indifferent, but also endlessly fascinating and sublime. The way a ball bounces, the way tetronimoes fit together, the way code functions. This new perspective is not a reversal of Bogost’s earlier concerns but it feels like the results of a dedicated effort to get beneath them, to discover something foundational about the underlying nature of play and games. His success in this effort suggests that this book belongs beside Huizinga’s Homo Ludens, Suit’s The Grasshopper, and Sutton-Smith’s The Ambiguity of Play as a key work in the field. It is probably Bogost’s best book to date, and that’s saying something.

It is also (and probably not unrelatedly) his most personal book. The threads that tie the book together are drawn from his life, his work, his family, his habits and hobbies. Bogost is a writer known for calculated erudition and acerbic wit and this book has both, but it has more. It is weird and warm; human, worldly. It is as if, contemplating the central thesis that games provide an opportunity to confront the stubborn truth of the world, he decided to let the lived reality of his own life guide his thinking. Rather than grand theory-spinning we get close observation of games and life as they actually are. Not idealized, not demonized, not disappointing, or frustrating, or thrilling, or boring or amazing or fantastic. Not life-changing, just life. But look at life, look at the ways it moves and doesn’t move. The world, with its limited degrees of freedom, unfolds into intricate arabesques more marvelous than any grand theory could contain. This is the secret of games as Bogost has come to understand them.

In addition to being deeply personal, Play Anything is also deeply philosophical. For those of us who have followed Bogost’s forays into Object Oriented Ontology without every quite understanding how they relate to his work on games, this book closes the loop, providing an intuitive and satisfying connection. The way that games draw us in to trace the convoluted surfaces of objects and rules and materials and code and the brute facts of their behaviors and interactions provides a model for a way of looking at the world beyond the demands of our egos and the distortions of our desires. (The apparent contradiction that OOO itself is an intensely human project, fully subordinate to our egos and desires, it just another one of those facts about the world that we can play with and admire.)

It has long been a habit of many ambitious game creators and critics to expound on the glorious potential of games while disparaging their current status. This book suggests a different way of thinking about games’ potential. It is not up to games to evolve into a more beautiful form, one more pleasing to us, more full of meaning. It is up to us to rise to the challenge they present – the challenge to inhabit the world’s corners, to see how they work and how we work inside them. The beauty of games is the play of close attention, and it’s all around us, waiting for us to look.

It could be a book.... well, this book is for you regardless of who you are.
By Nick LaLone
Play Anything is a book that is hard to describe.

It could be a book for those looking to understand how to escape their misery.
It could be a book for game designers looking to connect more intimately with culture in their designs.
It could be a book for academics who want to understand how play is intimately connected to culture itself.
It could be a book for a parent who wants to understand their children better.
It could be a book for those who just cannot fathom millenials.
It could be a book for millenials who want to understand themselves.
It could be a book for David Foster Wallace fans.

It could be any of those things and more...or less.

Play anything is a book that manages to cross disciplinary lines, publics, fandoms, and all along the way, offer a simple, unintuitive position on the function of play as a function and creator of culture itself. I say unintuitive because much of the book is going to be counter to the lived experience. It must be counter, it must be unintuitive because intuitively, the tedium and boorish nature of everything we do is constantly defined as those things we shouldn't do. For us, those of us living those lives, the constraints of our everyday life (supermarket lines, getting gas, cooking food) are those things we cannot fathom. They are simply acts performed and tolerated throughout the day so we can do something "fun."

Yet, much like a fish who cannot comprehend water, it is those constraints that offer us a way to experience, to play with.

It is something fascinating to think about. If you are an academic who researchers games, I believe this book might be one of the more important pieces to hit game studies in quite some time. For me, I have long been frustrated that the concept of "magic circle" has been dissected from the definition of play. I have been frustrated that play's significance for culture has been mostly ignored. Game studies isn't about games, but about culture itself.

Do yourself a favor and head into this book as quickly as possible.

Great idea-sharing potential, very poor delivery
By Shawn Pierce
For the first time in a long time I started a book without finishing it.

The idea of starting a book without finishing it does not frazzle me as I would prefer not to be a slave to be a book that is leading me nowhere. However, I do consider myself able to bring out key details and ideas despite annoyances with a book or writing style.

I struggled with Bogost's writing style. He proclaimed his wonderful ideas (and they were really great ideas - no sarcasm) but in a way that was repetitive and boring. There were many insights that came up and interested me, but so much of it was weighed down by the cloudy presentation he gave in his book.

Also, despite his repetitive style, I continually found myself having to go back to the beginning of the chapter's to identify the definitions he gave to his key terms: boredom, fun, and games. I loved his definitions and they fit into a holistic worldview (one that I encourage) but they were muddled with so much extra verbiage that I couldn't see the forest for the trees or vice versa.

Overall, this is a book that has great idea-sharing potential. But it just doesn't deliver those ideas through a great medium.

For a more cogent presentation of Bogost's ideas, I would recommend checking out an interview between Bogost and Brett McKay of the Art of Manliness podcast.
