Bud and Donny Pence, great uncles of author Samuel Anderson Pence and neighbors and contemporaries of Frank and Jesse James, were members of Quantrill's Guerrillas during the Civil War. They participated in many engagements against Union forces led by William Quantrill, including the ill-fated foray into Kentucky in 1865, and survived to tell about it. Their stories, and the stories of many other guerrillas, are told in this book. Sam Pence, a native of Clay County, Missouri, worked on this manuscript for many years but never published it. Now, forty years after his death, his grandson Daniel Pence has edited and published the work, keeping the flavor of Sam’s folksy, down-to-earth style of writing. Sam arranged the work in a manner similar to that of John Newman Edwards, author of Noted Guerrillas, which Sam references. Quantrill expert Harold Dellinger added more current information on some of the guerrillas. Carolyn M. Bartels provided additional subject matter expertise and editing. This book contains an index of names and a biographical section on many of the men who rode with Quantrill and made the ill-fated trip into Kentucky on January 1, 1865. There are photographs of William Quantrill, "Bloody Bill" Anderson, Allen Parmer, Bud Pence, and Donny Pence.

About the Author
Samuel Anderson Pence was born in 1885 in Kearney, Missouri. He was the third of four children of Samuel Adam Pence and Fannie Price Anderson and the descendent of Adam Pence, who migrated to Clay County, Missouri from Kentucky in 1825. Sam grew up in Kearney, where his father was the proprietor of a drug store, and graduated from Kearney High School. He married Rosa Louise Reid in 1909, and they lived in Kearney until 1916. Sam and Rose had a son, Leland Hadley, and a daughter, Lois Claire. Over the course of fifty years, Sam worked as a cashier, secretary, office manager, accounting clerk, and bank teller for twenty different employers, resulting in family relocations to Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Texas, Washington, and back to Clay County, Missouri before he retired in 1954 and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he died in 1971. Sam loved to tell stories and jokes to his grandchildren and other listeners, usually concluding with, "I've got a million of 'em." He was a prolific letter writer, and his letters often contained detailed, hand-drawn illustrations. He also dabbled in writing poetry. Sam had a lifelong interest in 19th century Clay County, Missouri history. As a young man growing up in Kearney, he had occasion to meet and talk with, or overhear conversations among, some of the men and women who lived through those tumultuous Civil War and reconstruction years, including Frank James and Cole Younger. Those conversations formed a unique component of his manuscripts about the James Boys and Quantrill's guerrillas.

Excellent Book Of Historical Men In The Border War

Should be read in every high school history course in America. This book tells in great detail about the lives the guerrillas led before during and after the Civil War. The author explains why these men joined the various guerrillas groups. If you want to read an eye opener about the border war this book is for you.
