Nine lives—nine people treated in intensive psychoanalytic treatment- are described from within. Their emotional lives, internal struggles, conflicts and anguish are vividly described and understood. Each individual's story is unique and yet these people are tied together by their shared humanity—the human struggles that the sensitive reader can identify with and appreciate. "Man is more human than otherwise," an aphorism put forth by the famous psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan, underscores this commonality of human experience.
A detailed description of each patient's intensive treatment invites the reader to enter into the patient-therapist relationship, with its intricacies and intimacies, and to then speculate on what is ultimately helpful and what "cures" in the therapeutic process.

Psycho-therapeutic Sampler
By John Petralia
Forrest Gump got it just about right. Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get, especially if you are a psychotherapist like Dr. Newell Fischer. In this nine case Sampler, we get a first hand summary of what it's like behind the closed doors of a long time practitioner. We meet: Sara, a young woman who wants to kill her new born; Claude, the urine soaked teenager; Henry, who sleepwalks through life; the self-loathing Diana; a black woman who acts way too white; an anorexic; a guy who likes getting beat-up; a woman who claims to be his mistress; and, another who `likes' getting abortions. None of the stories comes along with a quick fix. In Sara's case, therapy progresses over thirty years. This is not McTherapy. Nor, does Fischer only provide success stories. In one case, his patient commits suicide with pills. In her suicide note, she assures Dr. Fischer that none of the pills were his. Failure. It goes with the territory. If you're looking for a rose garden, read another book. This one is not airbrushed but it is short. Indeed, my only criticism of this 133 page Sampler is that in his efforts to "simplify, reduce, condense, and omit" Dr. Fischer, the writer, has not always done full justice to the human complexities faced by Dr. Fischer, the eminent psychiatrist.

An authentic, readable look into the lives of a well-respected psychoanalyst and nine of his patients
By Robert Welker, Ph.D.
"Easy reading is damn hard writing." This quote--frequently attributed to Nathaniel Hawthorne--kept popping into mind late at night as I continued reading Nine Lives long beyond bedtime. What's unusual about Newell Fischer's page-turner is that the suspense emerges in concise descriptions of nine actual psychotherapies rather than in fictional narrative.
Although I've had a bit of trouble with the term, if one had to categorize Nine Lives--as those in the publishing industry require--"creative nonfiction" would apply. In fact, this may be the first book that helped me understand how the category is useful. The creative part of nonfiction refers to how observations, reflections and explanations are conveyed rather than taking liberties with veracity. Newell Fischer seamlessly interweaves clinical observation with psychological research and theoretically informed intervention, and does this in Standard American English rather than in rarefied terminology.
His selection of Nine Case Histories Reflecting the Human Condition is a representative sample of the range of mental problems and personal dilemmas one might expect to experience during decades of clinical practice. He deserves much credit for including cases with unfortunate outcomes alongside the successes, which he presents with a professional and personal modesty that is refreshing in the current context of gilded pharmaceutical advertisements, devaluation of psychotherapy by third-party payers, and inflated claims of quick-fix therapies.
Mostly, however, I think the impact of Nine Lives stems from Newell Fischer's respect for "the human condition" and his perspective of participation in it.
If you would like an authentic look into the inner lives of a well-respected psychoanalyst and nine of his patients, a glimpse into in-depth psychotherapy, and an informed view of the role of unconscious mentation in being human, read Nine Lives.

Fascinating case studies and insightful commentary.
By Anna
This book helped me--a lay person--understand the nature and practice of psychoanalysis through fascinating case studies and insightful commentary. Much of the book read like a novel--even a mystery novel--rather than a clinical textbook or academic tome. I enjoyed the doctor's personal voice through the book. He displays a sensitivity about his patients and their struggles that helped me think differently about those who have personal struggles (all of us), and I've recommended it to students I know who are considering medicine (and psychiatry in particular) as a profession. More than any other book I've read, this book helps us understand the complicated but profound relationship between analyst and patient and helps us all to see that we all have something in common--even with the most distressed.
